The SSP is an evidence-based listening therapy designed to reduce sound sensitivities and improve auditory processing, social engagement and to overall improve how we feel, think and connect with others. How is this accomplished? By listening to at least 5 hours of specially filtered music.
The music stimulates the Vagus Nerve, along with exercising the inner ear muscles.
If you or someone you know struggles with...
• anxiety and stress
• sensory issues
• self regulation
• social interactions
…the SSP may be a good fit.
The Vagus Nerve is part of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), which regulates many bodily functions including digestion, breathing and heart rate. There are 2 branches of the ANS, the Sympathetic Nervous System ("fight or flight") and Parasympathetic Nervous System ("rest and digest").
The Vagus Nerve is an integral part of the parasympathetic nervous system which calms the body after fight or flight.
By stimulating the vagus nerve, the body is given signals of safety, allowing your system to feel calm and relaxed.
The core program is 5 hours of listening, and it is recommended to listen no more than 30 minutes per day. Everyone responds to the music differently and will tolerate different lengths of listening sessions.
Yes!
The SSP is NOT a standalone program. It is designed to enhance the outcomes of any therapy or program you may be engaged with.
The program is delivered remotely or in-person or a combination of the two.
If you are listening at home, you will need a device to download the app and listen to the program as well as a pair of simple over ear headphones (no noise cancelling or fancy features). Headphones are available to rent for $10/month if you are local.
It all depends. Some changes will be noticeable during the program, and some many weeks after the program has ended. It is important for you to tune in to yourself and how you are feeling to really amplify the differences you may notice.
Everyone is different.
You may find yourself reacting more calmly to stressors, or resetting back to baseline more quickly after a stressful event. You might be paying attention to conversations better, be more interested in engaging with others or overall feeling more calm. You might even feel more joyful and carefree.
Completing the SSP before or during a NeuroMovement series can be a great way to calm your nervous system and emphasize that feeling of safety. As I’ve said before, when your nervous system feels safe, so much is possible. Your brain will be primed and ready to learn!
The SSP uses a "bottom up" approach that changes how your system responds to stimuli. It is not an aid to help you feel calm in the moment (although that may happen).
